Gradually, consciousness returned to Althea. She snuggled into the cozy warmth close to her back, feeling something heavy draped over her midsection, just below her breasts. With a quiet hum of satisfaction, she intertwined her fingers between the strong ones covering her.

“Lovely lady.”

The rumbling male voice feathering over her ear made her shiver.

“Are you here in my arms, or are you just a dream?”

A loud crash and a wailing squeal made Althea jerk and her eyes pop open. The smell of alcohol mixed with unwashed bodies made her nose wrinkle. Her side twitched in pain from lying on the hard surface of the floor, and she wrinkled her nose at the stagnant order. Oh, that’s right. She fell asleep behind the bar. She sucked in a breath when a charley horse started in her left leg. With a hiss she straightened her legs, and the pending cramp faded away.

The only thing that made her position bearable was the blanket of warmth pressed against her back. Wait, that couldn’t be a blanket. Blankets didn’t breathe. Or feel so toasty. Or speak in that sexy, inviting tone.

A set of barf-brown webbed feet, complete with round suckers for toes, shuffled back and forth in front of her before lumbering away. Now the only thing in her line of vision were open cabinets filled with empty glasses and mugs waiting to be used.

When the man behind her shifted and pulled her close, she sucked in a breath. Oh God, it was him. The Zerin was wide awake and very happy to see her. It may have been a long time, but it wasn’t hard to recognize what poked her in her lower back. She moaned and resisted the urge to wiggle her butt in invitation.

“I’m afraid this is no dream,” she responded in a low voice. “It’s more like a nightmare.”

His soft chuckle made goosebumps rise at the back of her neck. “As long as I’m with you, a nightmare would never dare show its ugly face.”

This guy couldn’t be real. No man talked like that. Her heart sank. Her ex-husband used to make fun of her when she’d gush over a romantic scene in a movie. In a condescending tone, he’d tell her if a man talked like that, he probably had a boyfriend somewhere. No straight man would ever speak or act that way.

Grimacing, she squeezed his hand and twisted out of his hold to sit up with her back against the wall. Pushing the heavy curtain of her curly hair away from her eyes, she braced herself to look at him. Oh lord, just her luck. The first time they had a chance to speak together, and she had to look like hell. Her stupid hair had to be tangled and flying everywhere like she stepped off an amusement park roundup ride.

Holding a section of her unruly tresses, she took in her fill of the man lying next to her. Didn’t look like the captivating man next to her had the same hair problem.
